Tikit to ride?

Bike Friday are leaking - virally? - some info on their new machine for 2007, which promises, much like the much derided (although less so in the US, where not only do the cops in Philly station but also the late Rumsfeld use one) Segway to solve the world's transport problems.

Info. and some videos here: http://www.bikefriday.com/tikit

Could see it denting sales of Bromptons in the states, where Bike Friday is already pretty dominant along with Dahon, but not because of it's frighteningly fast fold (all to do with a catch in the seat column and internal wiring gubbins - wouldn 't like it to start collapsing on an emergeny stop), but because (a), it's new, and (b), it has a little handle and wheels along like a little barrow. The B can sort of do that - but I've never seen anyone look particularly happy and unlopsided. Great for those - such as women generally - who find a Brompton a bit of a dead weight.

Another question: where are all the Brompton videos on YouTube and Google Video?

Good evening!
Im in the process of testriding both the Brompton and the BF Tikit.

Both are excellent bicycles.

Here is what I found so far:
The Brommie seems more nimble, quicker and ready to tear up the tarmac. The steering feels more tight.

The Tikit however feels more comfortable (probably coz it has a cushy saddle on it) and I like the gearing better on it. Although it's not as accurate as the Brommie, I like the quick fold and the gears. The Brommie has the better fold.

Tough choice. To me it's a match between handling and gearing!

Keep up the good articles! Excellent blog!

ok, to make things clearer....tikit folds quicker. however brommie has a smaller package.

it's hard to figure out what gear Im in on the brommie

both excellently made bicycles.

when you get the tikit in the UK, I eagerly look forward to any comparison tests you will make!

Cheers Robert. Look forward to giving the Tikit a go.

Gears are an interesting point - what with fixed bikes being all the rage, and London being pretty flat, even 2 gears seems excessive. And if you want more, there's the six speed option, double chain rings, reduced gearing, etc. etc. Tikit looks interesting, though. For me, the size of the fold is the winner. A Brookes saddle makes the ride pretty comfy as well.

Thanks Vites!

I bike from Washington DC to Bethesda MD, a 15 mile commute that involves some uphills. Our Crescent Trail is a constant uphill for about 4 miles (imagine a typical gentle invisible uphill in Hampstead Heath that goes on for 4 miles). Most of the terrain in MD is rolling hills, so having gears is important here.

I did my first commute on the Brommie, and I do like it very much. The Americans love the fold.

Now keep in mind the Tikit I rode is a prototype. The steering tube is a bit wobbly on the ride, however BF know that and they have changed the clamp. However Ihavent ridden the new model.

Anyway, Im slowly getting used to the gearing. I noticed that when I am trying to upshift from a lower to higher gear the gears keep slipping (easier to harder that is)
This is in the hub. I shift when not pedaling. The bike shop said that the gears may need some adjusting. Any advice in how to shift the gears is most welcome!

Cheers from me in the US!

Hmm. Sounds to me like the cable needs a little adjustment. It's recommended to get the cables and spokes looked at after about 100 miles after they've settled down from the fold and so on. Most dealers should offer this as part of the package.

Check out Sheldon Brown bike pages or the User Manual on the Brompton web site for how to adjust the Sturmey Archer hub (unless it's a SRAM, I'm not sure which is on which model in the US). Basically it comes down to adjusting the pulley cable next to the wheel until it sits right - there's also a hole in the hub to look at in the middle gear to check the solid bit of the little chain that adjusts the gear is aligned with the end of the hole nearest the wheel. Does this make sense? Not tricky, just a little bit of fiddling to get it right.

Also, take your weight of the pedals at the moment you shift. You can leave your feet on the pedals, just don't press so hard.

Hope this helps!

Also, check out the BromptonTalk list on yahoo groups. Lots of advice there.

Hey Vites,

Thank you so much for responding to my posts!

I am still trying to decide between the Brompton and the Tikit.

I took the Brompton to Milford Mill Baltimore where I will be living, and practiced a commute run from there to Penn Station.
The roads are absolutely horrid there, tons of potholes.
The Brommie is used to smooth British roads, not these holey horrors we see here.

Basically:

For the Brommie to work:
1. The gears should shift better and more precisely
2. Is there any way to make the brommie better on the potholes (shock post seats, a nicer saddle, etc)
3. Get rid of those diddy plastic wheels and replace em with rollerblade wheels (which is a brommie option) to facilitate rolling it.

For the Tikit to work:
1. Make it more alert and peppy. Perhaps it was slow coz the tyres were slow ones with high rolling resistance
2. Make it stay together on the fold, it should not come apart when carrying or rolling it
3. You guessed it, make it's stem not wiggle, and make it easier to slot in when unfolding.

I did post this on BromptonTalk, however since you are very familiar with this fine bicycle, I also ask for your guidance too!

PS. Keep posting!

Cheers!

It should be possible to set up the gearing so it's precise. It should just a matter of fine tuning the cable adjuster. Have a word with your LBS, or someone at NYCwheels. There was something in the Brompton Talk archives about dealers/repairers in NY.

I've some skate wheels on the back - the Bromton EZwheels are the best, as there's less risk of damaging the frame if you drop the bike heavily on them. Some people say they work better with the rear pannier. You can also pull the B. along with the handlebars up. TI options make it easier to carry.

M-bars rather than S-bars tend to be better on bad roads. Ditto Marathon tyres and a broken-in Brooks saddle (or squidgy gell one if you prefer). A pantour front hub can also be fitted (at cost). Some people have tried changing the B's elastometer or even a suspended seat post - and got warned of hernias... But for bad pot holes nothing but bike wheels will help. Or bunny hops. You get used to the ride, though.

Can't comment on the Tikit.
